Fritillaria meleagris is one of approximately 100 species within the genus Fritillaria, a collection of herbaceous bulbs belonging to the lily family (Liliaceous). The name "meleagris" derives from its resemblance to the spotted pattern of a guinea fowl. Known by various common names including guinea hen flower (due to the similarity of its flower pattern to guinea hens),and snake’s head fritillary, this species is seldom found in the wild but is frequently cultivated as an ornamental in gardens, with a lineage dating back to the 1500s.
