Acidanthera, also known as Abyssinian gladiolus is a stunning summer flowering plant that belongs to the Gladiolus family. It is prized for its elegant, star-shaped flowers that resemble those of gladiolus but the foliage has a more upright sword like refined appearance. The outer petals are white with deep purple markings and they emit a pleasant fragrance, making them an attractive addition to gardens. Acidanthera blooms in late summer to early fall, creating a dramatic and fragrant display when the flowers open along tall stems.
Typically, Acidanthera grows to a height of around 60–90 cm and prefers well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny location. These plants are generally grown from corms, which should be planted in spring after the last frost has passed. While the plants are somewhat frost-tender, they can be lifted and stored indoors during the winter. With proper care, it will continue to reward gardeners with its beautiful and fragrant blooms year after year.
